A 2017 Must-Read: Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills

Review: Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills This book. THIS BOOK. This book made me want to hug it to my chest, sigh, and start all over again. Emma Mills has done it again with Foolish Hearts. In fact, I would argue that Foolish Hearts surpasses her last two excellent books, First & Then and This Adventure Ends – and that’s saying a lot. Foolish Hearts is definitely one of my favorite contemporaries of 2017. The plot features Claudia Wallace, a high school junior who ends up accidentally overhearing the school’s premier couple, Iris and Paige, breaking up. Claudia’s always been well-liked, […]

In Which I Attempt to Read Too Many Books & Inevitably Fail | ARC August 2017

In Which I Attempt to Read Too Many Books & Inevitably Fail | ARC August 2017

I’m woefully behind, you guys, and I hope you’re still with me. Between summer and baby and nursery planning, friends and family, I’ve been pretty slow on the blogging. I’ve been reading steadily, but very lazy about posting. That’s why ARC August is, as always, a way for me to catch up and try to get my anticipated books and reviews up for the fall. Let me just say this: I’ve only done ARC August once before and I pretty much failed immediately. But sometimes, the journey is not about the destination. It’s about setting goals and just having them, […]

Maud: A Novel Inspired by the Life of L.M. Montgomery by Melanie J. Fishbane | Review

Review: Maud by Melanie J. Fishbane I’ve already told you all about my wild excitement at Maud, as well as my obsession with all things Anne of Green Gables. So let’s dive right into Maud. =p My first thoughts when reading MAUD: This reads like Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books! There’s something very simple, direct, and 19th century about the prose in Maud, and it instantly brought me back to all my moments learning about pioneer life as a child. Here’s the thing, though: this is not an idyllic time. Unlike L.M. Montgomery’s whimsical Anne of Green Gables, teen Lucy Maud […]

5-Star Review: The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli

Review: The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli The Upside of Unrequited is my favorite read of 2017 so far. You know how all the rest of you felt about Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda? That it was perfect and wonderful and so so cute? So, bookish confession here: I really liked Simon, but it didn’t completely blow me away. I know, I know. I loved Simon and Blue, and it was really fun. But it wasn’t like, completely and totally my book. This book, though. The Upside of Unrequited is MY Simon Vs. For me, it was utterly […]

Highly Recommended: Letters to the Lost & My Lady Jane | Mini-Reviews

Review: LETTERS TO THE LOST by Brigid Kemmerer Letters to the Lost is a captivating book that delves deeply into two characters’ lives. Juliet Young is a girl who lost her photographer mother in a car accident a few months ago. She is still deeply grieving. Meanwhile, Declan Murphy is an angry guy who is currently doing community service after a traumatic and dangerous incident. The book is beautifully narrated, switching between Juliet and Declan’s perspectives. There’s also really strong dialogue between the characters and their best friends and families, who are well-rounded and real. The romance between Juliet and Declan […]

Release by Patrick Ness | Waiting on Wednesday

Reasons RELEASE by Patrick Ness is on the tippy-top of my To Be Read list: 1) It’s inspired by Mrs. Dalloway, my favorite novel by my favorite author Virginia Woolf. Like, on my top 5 favorite books of ALL TIME. 2) It’s written by Patrick Ness, King of Cats, YA author extraordinaire of gems like The Rest of Us Just Live Here, A Monster Calls, and the soul destroying The Knife of Never Letting Go. Oh yeah, and he also wrote Class, the Doctor Who spinoff. 3) Reading a Ness book is always about pushing the envelope in some way – […]
