Recent Sci-Fi Reads: The Diabolic and The Handmaid’s Tale | Book Reviews

The Diabolic is the story of Nemesis, a biologically engineered bodyguard programmed to protect one person against anyone around her. Nemesis is the Diabolic for Sidonia, the daughter of an intergalactic Senator under investigation for treason. The Galactic Empire decides to force Sidonia to come to their planet instead as a punishment. Scared for her life, Sidonia’s mother sends Nemesis in disguise, where Nemesis must traverse the political establishment while pretending to be human. I wanted to like The Diabolic, but unfortunately, it wasn’t for me. The main issue was that Nemesis’ voice was kind of robotic and completely devoid […]

Top Ten Tuesday #6: Eleven Series I’d Like To Start But Haven’t Yet

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at The Broke and the Bookish to highlight a top ten list related to book blogging, and to get to know fellow book bloggers. Oh man. This is the perfect TTT for me – there are SO MANY series that I’ve been meaning to read, but haven’t been able to, either because I’ve been too busy, or there’s too much hype, or I’m just too behind. It’s no surprise that most of these are NOT contemps…I think that kind of says something about me as a reader. Anyway, in no particular order:  […]

Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Check out my review of Divergent, the first book in this series Review: I rushed out to get Insurgent after I stayed up all night reading Divergent, so that tells you something about my state of mind when I started it. That said, I didn’t find Insurgent quite as compelling as Divergent – it was compelling, don’t get me wrong, but the pacing was different as a lot of it had to do with Tris planning and figuring out what was going on around her. I liked this better in a lot of ways, though – I thought it better […]

Divergent by Veronica Roth

What is there to say about Divergent that hasn’t already been said? Like a lot of other readers, I felt the plot was very similar to The Hunger Games, but that the writing and world-building didn’t feel quite as strong. That said, I can’t deny that I was completely drawn into this story.
