Your New Comic Obsession: Check, Please! Book #1: #Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu | Review

Hello, hello, I’m back with my thoughts on Check, Please, the amazing webcomic turned book! I know it has been a very long time since I posted, but baby stuff has been keeping me busy. I’m back at work this week, though, so I think (hope?) blogging should be more consistent. In the meantime, friends, this latest book is an absolute MUST-READ. Review: Check, Please! Book #1: Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu A captivating graphic novel about hockey, friendship, and love. Told in little episodes based on a baker-turned-hockey player’s personal vlog, Eric “Bitty” Bittle’s is a former figure skater starting at […]

Recent DNFs: American Panda and Meet Cute

Hey guys, hope you’re doing well. Today I have a couple of reviews for books that just didn’t work for me: American Panda by Gloria Chao and Meet Cute, a YA anthology. Check them out and let me know if you agree with my thoughts or not! ***** REVIEW: American Panda by Gloria Chao Oh man. American Panda is one I seriously wish I’d loved more. It’s got an Asian-American protagonist going to college with the baggage of a tiger mom, jilted dreams of being a dancer, tons of Mandarin, and a cute Japanese-American love interest. And yet, Mei’s story […]

A 2017 Must-Read: Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills

A 2017 Must-Read: Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills

Review: Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills This book. THIS BOOK. This book made me want to hug it to my chest, sigh, and start all over again. Emma Mills has done it again with Foolish Hearts. In fact, I would argue that Foolish Hearts surpasses her last two excellent books, First & Then and This Adventure Ends – and that’s saying a lot. Foolish Hearts is definitely one of my favorite contemporaries of 2017. The plot features Claudia Wallace, a high school junior who ends up accidentally overhearing the school’s premier couple, Iris and Paige, breaking up. Claudia’s always been well-liked, […]

The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord | Blog Tour + Review

Hi guys, I’m delighted to be part of the Canadian blog tour for THE NAMES THEY GAVE US by Emery Lord. As some of you know, Emery is one of my all-time favorite, auto-buy authors. I love her so much that I hosted a week-long celebration of her work a few years ago! For this blog tour, I got to ask Emery one question, and I’ve also got a review of this wonderful book. Check it out. Review: The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord THE NAMES THEY GAVE US was a unique and personal read for me, and […]

You Don’t Know My Name by Kristen Orlando | Mini-Review

You Don’t Know My Name by Kristen Orlando | Mini-Review

Review: You Don’t Know My Name by Kristen Orlando I came into You Don’t Know My Name hoping for an Ally Carter like spy story. And knowing Swoon Reads, I expected a fast-paced book with a lot of romance. This book is definitely not Ally Carter, but it does do an okay job with the whole “normal girl who is secretly a spy” idea. I liked Reagan and her friendships, and I enjoyed the romance with her neighbour Luke. I also appreciated that the author took her time showing us Reagan’s teen life and what she leaves behind every time […]

GIVEAWAY CONTEST: Heartless by Marissa Meyer | Blog Tour: Queen of Hearts Excerpt + Review!

Hi guys, I’m delighted to be the first stop on the Canadian blog tour for Heartless by Marissa Meyer! Heartless comes out tomorrow, and to celebrate, I’ve got an excerpt focused on the future Queen of Hearts herself, Lady Catherine Pinkerton, and my review. Oh, and I’m also giving away a copy of the book – internationally! As many of you know, I’m a HUGE fan of Ms. Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series, which are four connected sci-fi fairy tale retellings. Marissa has an incredible talent for making fairy tale characters realistic and making us care about them. At the same time, she plays […]

Middle Grade Reads #1: Gertie’s Leap to Greatness and Rebel Genius

Middle Grade Reads #1: Gertie’s Leap to Greatness and Rebel Genius

Hi guys, today I have some middle grade recs for you, courtesy of my husband, Evan! Evan is a mostly comic book reader, with lots of literary fiction interspersed. That said, he’s really interested in the middle grade age group – his favorite cartoons (Adventure Time and Steven Universe) explore that age. So when we saw that Gertie’s Leap to Greatness was illustrated by Jillian Tamaki (one of the artists on Adventure Time), and Rebel Genius was written by the creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra (the cartoons), he volunteered to read and review. Read […]

The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood | Review + Blog Tour

Hi guys, today I’m excited to be part of the Canadian Blog Tour for The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood. This is a really unusual young adult novel, chock full of science and heartbreak, but with beautiful and quirky writing. Read on for a short Q&A with Harriet (about Dawson’s Creek, because Harriet did her Ph.D on it!), and then my review! Who is your favorite Dawson’s Creek character and why? Harriet Reuter Hapgood: Jen Lindley. Without question. I loved her from the get-go. She had such an awful time of it – sexualized way too young, […]
