The most beautiful man I've ever seen is the one who can ruin everything...
The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.
And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.
I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful -- pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full time job for me. It has to.
But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.
And it works--if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can't afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.
Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo...
Review: TEMPORARY by SArina Bowen & Sarah Mayberry
Swoony but family-oriented, TEMPORARY is one of the most rounded millionaire new adult romances I’ve read. It’s the first collaboration between my romance fave Sarina Bowen and Australia romance author Sarah Mayberry, and I am delighted that their styles meld effortlessly. A warm-hearted romance that hits all the right notes.
Grace Kerrington is a 25-year old New Yorker temping for a large firm called Walker Holdings. She’s desperate to get a full-time position as she’s the sole support for herself and her 15-year old sister Olivia. So when the opportunity comes up to help inventory and manage the New York estate sale for the brother of the CEO, she doesn’t hesitate.
Meanwhile, Callan Walker is the black sheep of the family, but very close to his uncle, the late Jack Walker (brother of the CEO). When he hears of his mother, Vicky, clearing Jack’s things, he knows something’s up -Jack had previously mentioned donating his wealth to charity and philanthropical causes. He shows up at Jack’s apartment…and meets Grace. It’s definitely attraction at first sight, but they’re on opposite sides here…which, of course, makes the whole thing more of an adorable mess.
To me, no one does new adult characters better than Sarina Bowen, and this is where TEMPORARY really shines. Grace and Callan both have a lot to lose at the beginning of this book, but despite that, their attraction is undeniable. I loved the slow unearthing of both their personalities.
Grace is a strong, fierce sister and protector, a fashion aficionado, with such a smart, level-headed approach to life (except in bed!). Meanwhile Callan is hot as heck (of course) but funny, a little goofy, and deeply good. When they finally get together, it’s sexy, but it’s also really realistic.
I honestly don’t want to spoil much more – this is a romance that was thorough and satisfying. While I haven’t read any of Mayberry’s work, I think this collaboration felt fresh – the love scenes felt unique without being unrelateable and the concept itself isn’t something I’ve seen. It felt like the authors had a great time writing it – and as a result, I had a great time reading.
Please welcome Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry to Mostly YA Lit!
Hi ladies, thanks so much for answering my questions! First off, can you in 5-10 words, tell me what your book is about?
Sarah: Charming Aussie playboy meets conscientious New York girl. Sparks fly.
Sarina: What she said.
You’re both celebrated new adult romance authors in your own right. What do you each feel you brought to the writing table at the beginning? Now that you’ve done one collab, what do you think you bring to the partnership?
Sarina: I bring… Wow. I don’t know. I bring words. Then she brings some. Then I bring some. It’s like a very long potluck supper. But the reason I wanted to write with Sarah is that I felt we had a lot in common already. It wasn’t hard to blend voices.
Sarah: What she said. Sarina is so funny, and she was great at keeping the pace of the book rolling along. I was great at being anal about our outline and worrying too much about our character’s psychological scars. Poor Sarina!
Sarina: Nobody ever told me before that my impatience was a virtue. So, thanks! 🙂
Sarah: You’re very welcome!
Ha! I love it. So tell me a little bit about how you developed Callan and Grace’s story. Who thought up the initial idea? Was it trend-driven (the millionaire thing is big right now in NA)? Did you have other ideas to begin with?
Sarina: I brought a kernel of an idea, and then Sarah took the plot and raised the stakes. And then we just ran with it!
Sarah: We wanted glamour, a bit of a fairy tale setting. We tossed around lots of ideas before settling on our story set up. Finding a real estate listing for an amazeballs apartment on the West Side we could use as inspiration kind of sealed the deal.
What is your favorite trait of Callan and Grace, respectively?
Sarina: Grace is so smart and loyal. Callan is also both of those things, but he begins the book not wanting anyone to know.
Sarah: Agreed. Grace is a warrior for her sister. And Callan is thoroughly kind and decent beneath his designer exterior.
Lightning round!
Fave candy?
Sarina: salted caramel
Sarah: peanut brittle
Fave place/attraction/city in Australia?
Sarina: Um…I haven’t been!
Sarah: Sydney is a must-see. One of the world’s most beautiful cities. I’m definitely taking Sarina there when she finally makes it Down Under.
The first line of chapter 5 of Temporary?
“It was strange being in Jack’s apartment without him.”
Fave recent romance read?
Sarina: Vespertine by Leta Blake and Indra Vaughn
Sarah: I’m re-reading my Georgette Heyer collection, so: Frederica.
Thanks so much, Sarah and Sarina, for stopping by and for your candid answers. I feel like you can tell that these two get along super well. It was clearly a mind-meld from the beginning, which made TEMPORARY a great read!
