Mini-Reviews: Wires and Nerve, Lessons in Falling, Romeo and What’s Her Name, The Inside of Out

What a delight to finally get a story from Iko’s perspective. I really enjoyed Wires and Nerve, Vol 1, the first installment of Marissa Meyer’s The Lunar Chronicles graphic novel series. Even though it’s the first book in the series, I would not recommend reading these without reading the Lunar Chronicles books. You won’t have the emotional attachment or the backstory needed to get into this graphic novel. That said, if you’ve read Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, and Winter, you will really enjoy this extra story. Set between the end of Winter and the final story in Stars Above, Iko takes […]

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han | On Lara Jean, The Realistically Immature Teen

Lara Jean-obsessed? Check out my “Three Days of Lara Jean” series! Review: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han I am a thousand years late to the Lara Jean love fest, but better late than never, right? This is a true story for dreamers, and it’s one that I fell for, hard and fast. Lara Jean Covey is the middle sister in a loving family, with a busy obstetrical surgeon of a dad, perfect older sister Margot, and fun younger sister Kitty. Lara Jean is a homebody; she loves baking, scrapbooking, and being cozy. Lara Jean is also […]

A Million Worlds With You by Claudia Gray | Mini-Review (& A Note on Consent and Rape)

Mini-Review: A Million Worlds With You by Claudia Gray Spoilers for the first two books, but not for this one. Easily the most action-packed of this trilogy, A Million Worlds with You takes us on a roller-coaster of emotion and movement. After discovering Triad and Home Office’s plans for destruction of many worlds in order to save a loved one, Marguerite is in a race with the most evil version of herself – the Wicked Marguerite, a girl whose “art” is sadism and destruction. Chasing her from parallel universe to parallel universe in order to try to prevent the loss […]

The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon | Review

Review: The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon You guys. I don’t usually like insta-love books. I don’t normally like books where characters meet and immediately know that they are going to be together forever. Hopeless romanticism often frustrates me. But look, if you’re going to write an insta-love book, then it should damn well be written like The Sun is Also a Star. It should have layered, complex characters with crystallized beliefs who banter super well. Characters who are influenced by more than just each other, and who, in one extraordinary day, share their vulnerabilities and their […]

| Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany | Play Review

Review: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Disclaimer: Light spoilers in this for the beginning of the play and its concept. If you don’t want to know ANYTHING at all, please stop reading now. If you don’t mind a bit more than the synopsis, read on. Reading Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is strange thing. On the one hand, it was a complete and total joy to be back in the wizarding world again, to see all my old favorites and to see brand new characters really spring to life. On the other hand, it’s a very strange to […]

The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel | Book Review

Hi all, today I have a review from my fantastic husband, Evan, of an adult fiction book by acclaimed writer Yann Martel, author of Life of Pi. Evan reads a lot of sci-fi and literary fiction (mostly Philip Roth and other contemporary authors), and he and I both enjoyed Life of Pi (the book AND movie) so he’s in the perfect position to take a closer look at this latest release from this literary giant. Please welcome Evan! Review: The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel With The High Mountains of Portugal, Life of Pi author Yann Martel delivers another beautifully […]

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner | Book Review

Review: The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner effervesces with the warmth and darkness of a small Southern Gothic town. Zentner creates an atmosphere that is both stiflingly oppressive and starkly beautiful – a landscape where both ramshackle homes and restored Victorians can coexist, where there’s dignity in both wanting to leave a small town and wanting to stay. It’s the beginning of senior year, and our main characters, Lydia, Travis and Dill are best friends looking to the future. For Lydia, the future looks bright. She’s a popular fashion blogger with a massive following […]

Under A Painted Sky by Stacey Lee | Review

Review: Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee was on so many bloggers’ favorites lists for 2015, and was on my own highly anticipated reads…and then I didn’t read it for ages. Thank goodness for my book club having it as the pick for Jan/Feb, because I really, really needed to read this one, and I think you will, too. Under A Painted Sky is the story of Samantha Young, a Chinese girl living in Missouri on a border town to the Oregon Trail in 1849. She’s been pretty sheltered for most of […]
