These Books Slayed Me So Hard I Can’t Review Them | Top Ten Tuesday

January 26, 2016 / 19 Comments / Book List, Book Memes, Top Ten Tuesday

This week’s TTT is a freebie, which gives me license to talk a little bit about some books that slayed me so hard, I just can’t review them because I’m not worthy.

Fangirl cover by Rainbow Rowell Second Helpings cover by Megan McCafferty The Dream Thieves book cover by Maggie Stiefvater The Wrong Side of Right by Jenn Marie Thorne book cover I Capture the Castle cover by Dodie Smith
 1.  2.  3.  4.  5.
Unearthly cover by Cynthia Hand Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock cover by Matthew Quick The Duchess War cover by Courtney Milan The Understatement of the Year cover by Sarina Bowen Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz book cover
 6. 7.   8.  9.  10.
  1. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell – I did a readalong with Sarah (@readthisya) ages ago, so we have notes on this, but I’ve never been able to get a review up…I think we basically just fangirled all over it because this book was SO DARN GOOD.
  2. Second Helpings by Megan McCafferty – this book is one of my all-time favourite books. Like AMAZING. INCREDIBLE. UNBELIEVABLE. And obviously, I have nothing to say other than READ THIS DAMN BOOK if you like high school and love and humor and EVERYTHING.
  3. The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater – I think because I audiobooked this, and then later discovered that I had forgotten some key details, I’m a little afraid of reviewing it. It was weird and beautiful and so so good, and I feel like I should do a paper re-read, but OH WELL.
  4. The Wrong Side of Right by Jenn Marie Thorne – why haven’t I reviewed this book? It’s so darn good, it deserves a review, but for some reason…all I have to say is, if you like smart, political YA contemporary, this should be on your list.
  5. I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith – this is classic YA (like, turn of the century), so it’s a little strange in terms of the relationships and gender roles but there are so many quotes in this that I highlighted. It’s a really unusual but delightful read.
  6. The Unearthly Series by Cynthia Hand – I read this entire series on my honeymoon and it’s just WONDERFUL. Probably one of my favorite paranormal series ever. But because of the binge read, I kind of feel like I don’t know where one book starts and the other ends. Maybe I could do a series review?
  7. Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick – this is one of the most intense and weird books I’ve ever read and I still think about it a lot. It’s about bullying and suicide and hope and I just don’t know how I could actually review it.
  8. The Duchess War by Courtney Milan – one of my first ever historical romances and it is MASTERFUL. It’s the book that made me realize that historical romance could be more than just, well, a romance – it could be smart, sassy, sexy, and very, very strategic. I haven’t really reviewed it because Courtney Milan is too smart for me, although I did try on GR.
  9. The Understatement of the Year by Sarina Bowen – I should really review the entire Ivy Years series because it’s just amazing, but this book…OMG. If you’re looking for incredible male/male romance, one that really looks at how it feels to be gay and how hard it can be…this book just broke my heart.
  10. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz – I don’t have words for how lovely this book is, and how honest and real and affecting it is. Ari and Dante are incredible and this is probably one of my favorite boy protagonist books ever.  Bonus: if you’re a fan of the new Hamilton musical, the audiobook is very ably read by composer/star Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Are there books you absolutely love but haven’t reviewed? Do you have my #bookbloggerproblems or #readerproblems where you’re left speechless by books? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Books that are loved so much, are definitely the hardest to review. I always try, but feel like it’s one big gush fest. I loved your freebie topic. I definitely agree with FANGIRL – that book was incredible!

  2. Great topic! And yes, I have books like this too. It’s like I don’t even know what words to use because none of them seem good enough and my thoughts are all just scrambled and I just love them. My biggest book like this is probably Winger by Andrew Smith. I also loved Fangirl and The Raven Boys is a series I’m hoping to read this year.

  3. The one book I’ve read relatively recently that stole a piece of me and completely demolished me (in the best way possible) is Mosquitoland by David Arnold! Seriously unbelievable and so relatable on so many levels! Also recently finished Hot Stuff by Janet Evanovich & Leanne Banks- so good. sexy but not raunchy. It too was a true page turner. These two books make me wanna start reviewing books myself. #bookbloggerproblems #readerproblems

  4. Fangirl was awesome, no doubt. I wouldn’t mind another book about Levi and Cath, although maybe it’s better not to go there again. Such a fun book tho.

  5. The Understatement of the Year reduced me to sobs in the middle of the night. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I also loved The Duchess War, but my favorite in this series is The Governess Affair or A Kiss for Midwinter. Or ooh, the Suffragette Scandal. Nevermind, I can’t pick a favorite.

  6. Oh, I LOVED The Wrong Side of Right! It blew me away when I read it last year, and just seeing you gush about it reminds me of how much I enjoyed it and want to read it again… Also, I’m happy to see that you loved I Capture the Castle! I’m looking forward to reading that one 🙂

  7. YES to Dream Thieves – I read my physical copy but it didn’t matter. That book was perfection and my review was NOT worthy!! I am planning a series reread though, if not in preparation for Raven King then at some point after. That series deserves many revisits to me ♥ Oh and I agree on Fangirl too, that book brought on lots of fangirling (ahem) over it’s awesomeness XD

  8. Autumn

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe literally left me speechless! It is so freaking beautiful.

  9. I bought Aristotle and Dante at Word on the Street and now I feel like I have to move it up my TBR! I’d already heard good things but if it slayed you like that I MUST devour it!

  10. I really like this topic! I feel the same way about Fangirl! I really really loved it and I tried to review but I don’t think my review did it justice. It’s definitely a book I can read over and over again. Cath and Levi <3 I've only read the first book in the Unearthly series. I was somewhat put off by the love triangle. Would you recommend me to keep going?

  11. Jelo

There are actually some books that pleasantly surprised me by how good they are as a whole, but the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy (is that the series’ official name? I don’t remember) left me in awe the first time I read it. And every time afterwards. People ask me about book recs sometimes, but I don’t even know where to begin explaining that one.
