Today, I’m back today with two mini-reviews of Cress or Fairest, which I never got around to reviewing, followed by my series wrap-up with some of my favourites (book, couple, characters, etc)! In this third book in Marissa Meyer's bestselling Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, now with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they're plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and prevent her army from invading Earth.
Their best hope lies with Cress, a girl trapped on a satellite since childhood who's only ever had her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker. Unfortunately, she's being forced to work for Queen Levana, and she's just received orders to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.
When a daring rescue of Cress goes awry, the group is splintered. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a higher price than she'd ever expected. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing prevent her marriage to Emperor Kai, especially the cyborg mechanic. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only hope the world has.

The Rapunzel-like Cress lives alone in a satellite where she uses her genius hacking skills to help Levana – but is desperate to defy her. Cress is incredibly capable and hilariously fangirlish, a dreamer who has always had a crush on Carswell Thorne, a petty thief currently travelling with Cinder. I loved this romance and how one-sided it was. I loved how much I identified with Cress, who is probably the nerdiest of all of the characters. I also loved the ending of this one, with the many, MANY discoveries of the characters. So good. The different storylines really converged well in this one, even if it got a little slow in the middle with the desert action.

In this stunning bridge book between Cress and Winter in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles, Queen Levana’s story is finally told.
Mirror, mirror on the wall,Who is the fairest of them all?
Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told . . . until now.
Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes full-color art and an excerpt from Winter, the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.

The darkest book of the series, this one is a bit of a standalone where we finally see Levana’s tale – and man, it’s bleak. Levana’s story is one of desperation and manipulation, and slow descent into madness. It’s hard not to both sympathize and hate her as we see her loveless childhood, the torture at the hands of Princess Channary, and how Levana comes to be. I applaud Meyer for writing this one because it was both fascinating and painful, and made my reading of Winter that much stronger when I got to Levana’s parts of the book.

Series Wrap-Up: Favourites from The Lunar Chronicles:

(doing some of these as part of Jenn from Book Addict’s Guide‘s #TLCReadalong!)

The Lunar Chronicles Covers

Favourite book: I think Winter because WOW. That was epic and brilliant!

Favourite fairytale adaptation: Maybe Scarlet? I didn’t know how Meyer would pull off the whole wolf thing, and do it in a way that made sense for the rest of the story, but she did, and I’m impressed.

Favourite character: I LOVE THEM ALL. But maybe a tie between Winter, Thorne, and Cinder.

Favourite boyfriend: Thorne, I THINK. But I really, desperately loved Kai in the last book.

Favourite couple: Too hard. I seriously can’t decide, especially with this last book.

Favourite catchphrase: Either “wire cutters” or “broken doesn’t mean unfixable”

Favourite swoony bit: I can’t answer that without a big spoiler, do NOT read if you haven’t finished Winter: [The part where Thorne kisses Cress in the atrium after she admits her feelings, and he has kissed a Lunar girl who glamoured herself as Cress…OMFG just thinking about it is making me fan myself]

One thing I would change about these books: Seriously, like, nothing. Except that I want an extra scene at the end with Iko and ****** – if you’ve read Winter, you know who I’m talking about.

The Final Word

If you love great characters, snarky lines, swooniness, and Star Wars or any other fun sci-fi, YOU SHOULD READ The Lunar Chronicles series. It is well worth the investment of time, money and fangirling/boying. If you haven’t read them, I highly recommend the audiobooks, or the paper books – but if you feel strapped for time, the audio is really good – and I’m picky about audio. =)

I haven’t finished the series (still stuck on Cress), but I’m so excited to finish it. I loveeeee Scarlet and Wolf. I think that’s one of the reasons why I haven’t read Cress because I know there aren’t a lot of scenes with them. I NEED THESE ADORABLE BBS IN MY LIFE ALWAYS. Though, I’m very interested to see Thorne and Cress’s relationship. 😀

    • There are definitely some scenes with Scarlet and Wolf, but I promise that you’ll enjoy everything after them, too – but I know what you mean, those two are VERY lovable. I honestly can’t choose my fave relationship, they’re all amazing! Hope you get to it soon, Cee!
