“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that book bloggers are eagerly anticipating.

This week’s can’t-wait-for-it book is a super-fun sounding historical!

I’m Glad I Did

Author: Cynthia Weil
Publisher: Soho Teen
Expected publication: January 27, 2015

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and songwriting legend Cynthia Weil’s extraordinary YA debut opens the secretive doors of the Brill Building-the hit factory that changed history. Part Mad Men, part Grace of my Heart, part murder mystery, I’m Glad I Did is a coming-of-age story at an unforgettable cultural tipping point: the summer of 1963.

JJ Greene, a gifted 16-year-old songwriter, defies her lawyer parents by secretly applying for a job in the famed Brill Building-the epicenter of songwriting for a new genre called rock-n-roll. But their warnings about the evils of the music industry prove far darker than she imagined when she finds herself at the heart of a cover-up that involves hidden identity, theft, and possibly murder.

I was lucky to attend a panel on YA Buzz Books for Fall/Winter at BEA this year, and I’m Glad I Did was one of the picks I found out about there. Cynthia Weil is a debut author and a songwriting legend, and it sounds like most of the book is semi-autobiographical, which I love. This book has it all for me: performing arts, mystery, intrigue, and the sixties! I really, really hope it includes the fashion from the sixties, too – think Mad Men and the Supremes!

I also love that this one is about someone who isn’t really a performer, but is doing something that is really hard and behind-the-scenes: creating beautiful songs. I’ve attempted to write songs as a singer, and it is HARD. I’m really looking forward to seeing the process through Weil’s eyes.

Are you interested in reading I’M GLAD I DID? Are you into performing arts books, or books with a lot of mystery? How do you feel about 60s fashion? What are you waiting for this week? Let me know in the comments!

  1. As I was reading the synopsis, I was thinking to myself, ' that escalated quickly.' LOL.
I hadn't heard of this until right now, but I'm now interested in it. Will be adding to my TBR.
I have never read a performing arts book, but I do like mysteries. Too bad it's not released until January, I would have liked to read this on the beach in the next couple months.
Enough blathering from me. Great choice, Tiff!

    • Ha, it does escalate quickly! Yeah, it's kind of more of a beach read, but I think the long lead time means they get to do more promotion with Weil, which I'm sure isn't going to hurt. Performing arts books are fun – I hope you do get to read and enjoy!

      Thanks for stopping by!
