“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that book bloggers are eagerly anticipating.

This week’s need-it-now book is by YA royalty!

Publisher: Feiwel & Friends (Raincoast Books in Canada!)
Expected publication: October 7th 2014

In her most powerful novel yet, Newbery Honor author Ann M. Martin tells the story of girl with mental/emotional challenges and the dog she loves.

Rose Howard has OCD, Asperger’s syndrome, and an obsession with homonyms (even her name is a homonym). She gave her dog Rain a name with two homonyms (Reign, Rein), which, according to Rose’s rules of homonyms, is very special. Rain was a lost dog Rose’s father brought home. Rose and Rain are practically inseparable. And they are often home alone, as Rose’s father spends most evenings at a bar, and doesn’t have much patience for his special-needs daughter.

Just as a storm hits town, Rain goes missing. Rose’s father shouldn’t have let Rain out. Now Rose has to find her dog, even if it means leaving her routines and safe places to search. Rose will find Rain, but so will Rain’s original owners.

Hearts will break and spirits will soar for this powerful story, brilliantly told from Rose’s point of view.

This is not my usual kind of book. Yes, it’s a YA contemp, but as many of you know, I like happy endings and hard books are…hard. This one, though, really caught my eye, maybe because it’s about a girl and her pet…and it’s by YA royalty, Ann M. Martin of the Baby-sitters Club series. I’m very curious to see how Martin writes this from the perspective of Rose, especially because I’ve only ever read Baby-sitters Club by her. I loved BSC, but I wouldn’t call it great writing – and this one is going to require some really unique writing.
I also love, love, LOVE the twist right at the end of this synopsis – that Rain the dog isn’t actually Rose’ dog. It’s just a brilliant concept and I think I’ll also learn a lot about OCD and Asperger’s. It looks heartbreaking and amazing.
Are you interested in reading RAIN REIGN? Do you like hard or difficult YA books? Did you ever read Baby-sitters Club? Do you love pets in YA like I do? What are you waiting for this week? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I have not heard of this book. It sounds really good and different. I like difficult YA books because they challenge our conceptions. Come check out my WOW.

  2. Hmmm… I haven't seen this one before! You're right, it looks heartbreaking AND really good! I don't usually choose the sad ones, but this one might go on my TBR anyway! 😉 And yes I read TBSC… I was a fanatic! Had a LOT of them… and then gave them all away, which was the worst idea ever, as I should have saved them for my daughters! (You don't think of that stuff when you're fourteen, though.) Thanks for sharing!
